9,3/10 Exceptional - Based on 11 reviews
A true haven of serenity nestled in the lush nature of Yamanouchi, Hotel Higashidate embodies the very essence of traditional Japanese hospitality. With breathtaking views of the surrounding mountains, this ryokan in Yamanouchi invites visitors to a sensory break where well-being and relaxation prevail. Its quality wellness area offers an open-air hot spring bath, a soothing sauna, a whirlpool bath, and a public bath, perfect for rejuvenating after a day of exploration or skiing.
Inspired by authentic Japanese zen, the ryokan’s rooms combine refinement and modern comfort. The Japanese-style suites with their outdoor baths offer a unique experience, while the superior rooms, equipped with traditional tatami and contemporary amenities, are suitable for solo or family stays. The panoramic view from the windows invites you to contemplate the magic of Yamanouchi’s landscapes in soothing silence.
Just as much a celebration of flavors as of landscapes, the Isshozui restaurant of the ryokan, accessible by reservation, offers subtle and creative Japanese cuisine. The tasty and balanced breakfast is a celebration of fresh local products. For the more adventurous, a selection of typical nearby restaurants, such as Sobaroku, adds a note of culinary diversity to your stay. At Higashidate, every meal is an immersion in Japanese culinary tradition.

Japanese Authenticity Evaluation
6/10 Charming view of nature and some traditional elements like tatami and shōji in the rooms. However, the exterior architecture and some modern details reduce the authenticity. The bath facilities seem pleasant but lack typical elegance. A pleasant overall ambiance but more geared towards a contemporary blend than purely Japanese.

Amazing Japanese meals
Japanese style breakfast and dinner were delicious, fresh, and healthy. Different dishes every day made meal times exciting and memorable, and the traditional experience was highly appreciated.
Excellent location for skiing
Great location for ski-in-ski-out, with direct access to the slopes and gondolas. The ski room locker opens onto the slopes, making it very convenient for skiers.
Outstanding and helpful staff
The staff were extremely helpful, friendly, and accommodating. They went above and beyond, especially during heavy snow, and made guests feel very welcome.
Comfortable rooms and private onsen
Rooms, especially the newly renovated or deluxe ones, were fantastic and spacious. Some included private onsen and massage chairs, providing extra comfort and relaxation.
Beautiful hotel facilities
The hotel lobby is tastefully designed, offering complimentary coffee and tea with a beautiful view of Shiga Kogen. Ski drying rooms and onsen facilities were also very nice.
Quiet and relaxing atmosphere
The property is very quiet, making it ideal for those looking to relax. Even during peak ski season, the hotel did not feel crowded at all.
Negative Reviews
Older rooms could use renovation
Some of the older rooms are showing their age and would benefit from renovation. The difference between old and newly renovated rooms is noticeable.
Limited dining and entertainment options
There are no other places close by to eat or drink in the evening, and the area is very quiet with no entertainment options nearby.
Traditional food may not suit everyone
If you don't enjoy traditional Japanese food, dining options are limited and may not meet all tastes, as there are no alternatives on site.
Remote location and language barrier
The property is a bit out of the way and may be challenging for non-Japanese speakers, as communication can sometimes require translation.
Outdoor onsen view for women limited
The outdoor onsen for women does not have a view, likely for privacy reasons, which may be disappointing for some guests.
Lift opening time for skiing
The lift to the top from the hotel opens at 9am, so early skiers need to ski down to another lift that opens earlier.
